When I first started my career as a counselor, I had the opportunity to help a nice man I’ll call Michael. Michael was a partner in his firm and had done very well in his career. He came to me with two issues: One of his work projects was with an extraordinarily difficult client. The client berated Michael every time they were together. The client complained to Michael’s partners about him and Michael was the subject of many staff meetings. Michael felt powerless. At the same time, Michael’s aged father was struggling with dementia and was calling Michael at all hours of the night with fears about robbers in his home.
When I met Michael, he lowered his head and asked, “How did it get like this? I used to feel so confident. Now I feel either angry or helpless.”
Michael and I worked together for a while and he found his way back to the confident Michael he once was. I taught him some techniques to use with the difficult people in his lives. He actually enjoyed using them! And the best part? He ended up getting what he wanted. The client lost the power he had over Michael and Michael had a renewed vigor for his work. He found compassion for his father and stopped feeling over-responsible for him. I so enjoyed helping Michael.
Since that time, I have devoted my professional life to helping people with the difficult situations and difficult people in their lives. Some call me “The Difficult People Expert.” I find that amu-sing. But the truth is that I do love helping people get back to feeling content and that all is well.
Is it time to get some help? If so, please call me at 415-474-6707. Let’s get started.
